IVF Cost in China and the United States

A practical comparison of IVF prices in China and the United States, including common add-on costs and eligibility requirements.

Published reference prices suggest that one fresh IVF cycle can cost substantially less in China, but the two ranges do not necessarily include exactly the same services. A written, itemized treatment plan is essential before comparing the totals.

About these prices

The China estimate is a June 2026 reference range for a fresh cycle through a tier-3 public hospital international department. It lists medication within the estimate but prices ICSI, preimplantation genetic testing, and a later frozen embryo transfer separately. The U.S. range was published by the White House in February 2025 and does not define one standard set of included services. Neither range is a guaranteed quote, and more than one cycle may be needed.

At the midpoint of these published ranges, the treatment-price difference is about $11,250 per cycle. That calculation excludes travel, accommodation, time away from work, repeat cycles, and any services omitted from either quote.

What can change the IVF total?

The base cycle is only the starting point. Medication dosage, ICSI, embryo freezing, storage, preimplantation genetic testing, donor programs, and additional frozen embryo transfers can materially change the final bill. Initial fertility testing and anesthesia may also be billed separately, depending on the clinic.

Ask each clinic for the same line items: consultations and screening, stimulation medication, monitoring, egg retrieval and anesthesia, fertilization method, embryo culture, fresh or frozen transfer, freezing, storage, genetic testing, and follow-up. A low base price is not meaningful if necessary services appear later as add-ons.

Eligibility in mainland China

Price is not the only threshold. Mainland China's assisted-reproduction rules treat IVF as a medical treatment for infertility, and official guidance requires a married couple to provide identification and a marriage certificate. Beijing's official English-language guidance says foreign couples should provide passports and a marriage certificate. Patients should confirm eligibility and document requirements with the receiving hospital before making travel arrangements.

How to compare clinics

  • Request an individualized review

    A fertility specialist should review age, diagnosis, ovarian reserve, sperm factors, previous treatment, and relevant records before the clinic recommends a protocol or gives a meaningful estimate.

  • Ask for outcome data that matches your case

    Compare clinic-reported live-birth outcomes for patients in a similar age and diagnosis group, and ask whether the figure is per retrieval, per transfer, or cumulative. A pregnancy rate and a live-birth rate are not interchangeable.

  • Plan for the complete trip

    Confirm how many visits and days in China are expected, whether remote monitoring can be completed in the United States, what English-language support is available, and how frozen embryos and follow-up care will be handled.
